Online Language Lab & Social Network

I can't believe this is my 8th and final posting already-these two weeks have flown by!
Today, we looked at the use of online language labs. This tool used online is new to me. I have used similar tools in my teaching and am happy to find a new one that is more convienient for everyone because it can be used outside of the classroom. I would definitely like to use this resource in my teaching for collecting speaking samples. I also learned alot more today about the LMS moodle. At BVC we have Blackboard but I don't currently use it, perhaps in the future.
The latter part of our class was devoted to the start of our final projects. I am continuing to learn about how to operate MAC systems as well as the programs on it, for example, today I used Photo Booth to record my introductory video for my project.

Thanks to Jean and best wishes to all my classmates and a big congrats to those who are graduating!!!

Interactive Technology & Teaching in a Participatory Digital World

We spent today finishing up our videos from yesterday and then moved on to interactive technology, focusing on SMARTechnology devices. Today was the first time I'd seen a smartboard in action. They seem like they have alot of capability and practical applications in the classroom. The number of lessons and online resources to use with the technology is growing, which is excellent. I look forward to hopefully having access to this type of technology in the near future.

The Smart Response technology that we looked at today is very similar to the CPS (Classroom Performance System) that I use at Bow Valley College. I find some of the ways that you navigate in this software is a bit confusing at first but the students really enjoy it and it can be used for alot of different things in the classroom.

Videos

Hi,
Today we made short videos using imovie. This is a really wonderful and fairly easy tool to use. I find the Macs to be a little like using a new language but it is great for me to use one since I'd like to learn. The video technology is a great tool for the classroom. I have used video and photos as apart of my lessons. It would be great to incorporate more video creation in the classroom. I'm sure I'd be surprised to find how many of the learners in my class probably already know how to do it! The idea that learners can watch "lecture" videos at home for homework and then have class time to practice is ideal. I'd like to aim to do this in my class.
Here is the video.

Web 2.0 Tools

Happy Friday!!

Today's class had a tonne of fantastic links and online tools that I absolutely love. Flipsnack.com is awesome and really great, my learners will definitely benefit from this. It is likely that I will create most of them. But I do want to try and get them to make a flip book of their own in groups.

A quick reflection on the TPACK model, I think that it makes total sense that the goal/objective of the lesson is the driving force behind the how and the technology is used. Just like planning a lesson or a curriculum, it needs a vision and a final outcome so that you know whether or not you've achieved something.
Have a great weekend!

Elluminate

Hi,
The video we started with this afternoon, was on You Tube giving a demo of the newest addition to facebook-Skype. The skype function allows people to video chat within facebook. A very handy tool. One of the websites that we discussed today, 2learn.ca looks like a really great site that I could use with my learners. The students do free reading daily and often choose children's books and on this site there are audio stories that could supplement their reading. Something from today's class that I will also bring with me back to my teaching is the video conferencing possibilities that could take place on skype or a similar stage to bring in experts or guest speakers into the lessons more often!

Today's class was centered on Elluminate. I have used this before as an online student at the UofC. I did learn a few new things about Elluminate and the possibilities for a moderator. I don't know if I would ever be able to use this in my current practice, however, I would when collaborating with colleagues. I can definitely see the value in it!
See you tomorrow.
